We are the Newcomers in Ottawa community – If you are new to town, you will find support, meet-ups, and information to help you!
This article is part of a project called Newcomers’s Stories, where we share, learn and support newcomers!
Meet Shadia Sallit – She is a mom, a wife, an entrepreneur and she is so pleased to have been asked to share a bit more about herself on this platform.
I am the co-owner of an event planning and design company called Lily & Roses Exquisite Events. We do a wide range of events from weddings to coorporate gatherings. We have been operating for 7 years and have a mandate of being a one stop shop for all event related needs. As an entrepreneur my business is like another baby to me. It’s an extension of who I am and it consumes most of my free time as well.
We recently met up with Shadia Sallit to ask her about her story and experiences as a newcomer to Ottawa.
What brought you to Canada?
I was born and raised in Canada. I am actually second generation Syrian. My parents came to Montreal in the 70’s. This is where I grew up and lived most of my life.
Why did you choose Ottawa ?
Life kind of brought me here. My husband took a position in Ottawa and this is why I have been operating my business in both Montreal and Ottawa
What has been the biggest challenge for you since you came to Ottawa ?
It is hard not to compare both cities. It took some time to adjust to the rythem of Ottawa which is completely different from Montreal. This is a government city. Lots of coffee shops and restaurants are deserted at 9pm… And that’s the time we go out in Montreal. Building relationships is also not as easy as in Montreal. People are a lot more conservative and keep to themselves.
How have you tried to overcome that challenge?
Everything takes time. So finding awesome friends and employees took time but I did. I have been part of so many networking events, community events and charitable events and that has also helped me build professional and personal bridges
What are potential challenges newcomers face here in Ottawa? What can be done to make it easier for newcomers?
Well I’m sure everyone has their own stories and challenges. The great thing is that Ottawa is very community driven. Lots of fun and free activities on a weekly and weekend base. It’s so easy to find something interesting to do. There are also lots of opportunities and support groups for people who may have language barriers or nay be in need of help or assistance in some aspects of their lives.
Are you doing something to help newcomers or are you in interested in participating in activities for newcomers?
I am always up for a nice gathering! Meeting and sharing with people is in my blood. I also like to connect people together and help find opportunities for those looking
Any suggest for those who new to Ottawa ? Relates to job, friendship, social life ?
