We recently met up with Carla to ask about her experience on becoming a newcomer.

———-

What brought you to Canada?

My partner got a job offer here in Canada so we both moved here, we have read many wonderful things about Canada’s life quality, economy and job opportunities.

Why did you choose Ottawa ?

Because it’s Canada’s capital but still it’s a quiet, nice city.

What has been the biggest challenge for you since you came to Ottawa ?

A big challenge was to start making friends, getting to meet new people, apply for a work permit and recently searching for a new job without speaking French.

How have you tried to get over that challenge ?

I try to go to events and connect with new people, also I want to learn French.

What are the challenges newcomers face here in Ottawa? What can be done to make it easier for newcomers?

As an adult it’s not so easy so make new friends, specially if you’re working a full time job, also there are many doubts about all kind of topics, doctors, real estate, schools, etc. Newcomers group makes it easier by sharing each one’s experiences, doubts, etc.

Are you doing something to help newcomers or are you in interested in participating in activities for newcomers?

I would love to assist to the newcomers events and to help with any doubts if I have previous experience on that

Any suggestions for those who are new to Ottawa?

Just try to go out of your comfort zone, look for events related to your hobbies, don’t be afraid to go alone to an event, go and make new friends.
