List of the things you should do when you arrive in Ottawa:

  • GET ALL YOUR DOCUMENTS COMPLIANTS :

Then, go to government services at Ottawa City Hall to make your documents you would need in Canada a.k.a ask the Number of Social Insurance (this number is really important and you MUST get it ), or your Health Insurance Card. While you are waiting for it, don’t forget to pick up a Health Insurance for 3 months (to be confortable in case of health emergency) such as Allianz Healthcare, Bluecross (they are also French speakers), or other companies…

  • FIND A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE :

Depends of what you are looking for, how many people you are… But please keep in mind that average rent/per month in here can be higher than expected. You can find below some links to some websites :  Craiglist, Kijiji, agencies which rent apartments (CVL, District Realty, Rent in Ottawa…) and also on some Facebook group or on newspapers at bus stations…

We also suggest you to go out, visit the city, walk around to see where you want to live or to find any add.

  • OPEN A BANK ACCOUNT :

You have the choice between many banks and some are event offering special plans for the newcomers in Canada : Desjardins (they are French speakers), Scotia Bank, Bank of Montréal, TD …

  • FIND A PHONE PLAN ;

Same you will need a Canadian phone number for your everyday life. They are so many companies such as Virgin mobile, Fido, Vidéotron, Bell, Rogers… You just need to ask and to find the best one for you and your needs. Same for Internet.

  • FIND A JOB :

Here is probably the most important part of the list. We suggest you to go to some workshop to update your resumé on the Canadian way (it is very different from what you expect 🙂 !!) You can also go to some community centers (there are one in each district of the city such as Wesboro, Greenboro, Central, Vanier (they are specialized on French speakers)… You can also go to some association which help the newcomers such as OCISO, YMCA…

Support your community without asking in return . Be supportive and be mindfu

New to town? Old to town? We all welcome you! With a purpose of support each other! Your knowledge and experience is unique! So share it and it may help someone !
